‘Dayas’ big break for “Carrot Man”

The short film “DAYAS” is an advocacy film that helps local talents and filmmakers. It also provides education and entertainment during the crisis.

“DAYAS” means “the process of gold extraction from the ore.”

“DAYAS” is a brainchild of our executive producer and director, Direk Jennylyn Delos Santos (or Jianlin) and is a tribute to all the victims and the bereaved families of the “Ompong Tragedy” that saddened the Cordilleran community of Itogon, Benguet.

It is a narrative short film that focuses on the lives of two Igorot small-scale gold miners named Hacob (Kelvin Vicente) and Bantay (Jeyrick Sigmaton, known as “The Carrot Man of the Philippines”) from the mountains of Itogon, Benguet.

Hacob is a pure-blooded and good looking Igorot who lives with his grandmother who is a “balitok” (gold) buyer and an In-Ina (respected mother of the town).

In contrast, Bantay of the family Bundad, whose wife died of a chemical poisoning in the mines, is an unbeliever in rituals and the “gagaid” (sacred symbols of the ancestors).

He is the father of little girl and lives with his father and aunt.

The story was also inspired by the true-to-life story of director Jianlin’s family, particularly  that of her uncle, Igorot miner Benjamin Galletes.

Direk Jianlin ist he executive producer, writer, and director of “Dayas.” She is also known as the Cordilleran Realtor and is the driving spirit behind the Ray-Casa Group of Companies, Be Unrivalled Productions, and Sine Cordillera.

She dreams of showcasing the wealth of talented individuals that the Cordillerans have to offer.  It has been her intent to showcase not only the culture of the Cordilleras, but also its talents.

This has been the advocacy of director Jianlin and the people behind Sine Cordillera and Be Unrivaled Productions.  These two companies will finally make their presence known not only in the rest of the Philippines, but also around the world.

“Dayas” is her passion project as she wanted to give tribute to the small-scale gold miners of Itogon, Benguet and bring to life the beliefs, traditions, rituals, faith, and respect to the ancestors that is part of the Cordilleran way of life.

She also wants this film to be a showcase for local talents as evident in the cast, the crew, and the soundtrack of this Cordilleran masterpiece and short film, done with passion and love.

“Dayas” completed filming on February 2021 amidst the Covid 19 lockdown and while following safety health protocols.

It has been shown and presented on roadshows and has been warmly received by the people of Cordilleras who watched it, and by thousands of supporters who have seen it online.

Most recently, “Dayas” was selected as a finalist in the INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL MANHATTAN 2021 in New York City, USA, where the film’s lead star Jeyrick Sigmaton won the BEST ACTOR award in the Short Film category.

For many netizens, Jeyrick Sigmaton (the famous Carrot Man of the Philippines) is considered as one of the most notable pretty faces out there who had become overwhelmingly popular in social media circles and even in traditional media channels.

His acting skills, dedication to his role, and his empathy to the other cast and crew is a testament to his talent as a superb actor.

Nothing can prove this more than being recognized in local and international award-giving bodies – such as the International Film Festival Manhattan as Best Actor in the Short Film category.

Last November 27, he was also recognized by the “Dangal ng Lahi Awards 2021” held at the grand ballroom of Okada Manila hotel.

Director Peter Allan Mariano is a seasoned TV and Film writer, director, and cinematographer.

An IT and broadcast engineer by profession and a filmmaker by advocacy, he as written and directed the full length film “Babaylan” starring Derrick Monasterio and Nikki Valdez.

He is also the director of “Lingkod Bayanihan” for PTV4 and is currently directing the upcoming TV magazine show “Cycling Unlimited” for CNN Philippines.

He is that “Director from Manila” mentioned in interviews and articles about “Dayas” and is a non-Igorot who participated as Assistant Director and Director of Photography in the film’s production.

Meanwhile, Ms. Jinky Delos Santos-Lontoc is the Coordinating Director and online strategist for Sine Cordillera and Be Unrivaled Productions that brought to us this film.  She is the one actively coordinating with media networks and international film festivals for the promotion of this film.
