Andrew Ramsay’s acting earns praises, gets support from brother Derek, celebs

Andrew Ramsay earned praises from Cinemalaya community for dramatic acting role in Christian Lat’s Ginhawa. His brother Derek Ramsay, celebrities Pops Fernandez, Teejay Marquez, boy band North Star Boys, and actress Ellen Adarna were present during Ginhawa’s gala night last August 9.

Anton (Andrew) is an aspiring boxer who takes his fighting chances to continue his brother’s legacy and discovers the grim reality of the sport. Against his mother’s (Ruby Ruiz) wishes, Anton leaves their small town to pursue boxing in Manila where he unravels the ugly truth of the brutal sport.

In an interview, Andrew said his character takes effort and dedication. Most of the movie’s scenes shown his toned body, fighting for the life he wants for his mother played by Ruby. Both Andrew and Ruby delivered well.

The Ginhawa lead actor was impressive, not overdoing his acting. His acting was simple but remarkable. Fans also noticed his edge and what sets him apart from his brother Derek. One audience at Cinemalaya shared, “Makikita mo ‘yung pinagkaiba n’ya kay Derek. For a first timer, magaling si Andrew. Consistent ‘yung acting n’ya.”

Ginhawa is not only about the fight in the ring that a boxer has to overcome but it’s what happens outside the ring – the system, the politics, and the daily struggles of the poor in the Philippines.

For thousands of kids around the provincial and urban areas of the Philippines, boxing is an escape and a fight from the harsh realities of a third world country. As soon as the bell rings, the only thing that stands in the way of a measly cash prize or a sack of rice is their opponent.

Ginhawa presents the day to day struggle that these fighters go through in their village, in their community and in their family who are constantly facing the plague of poverty.

Regardless of the deadly consequences, these boxers continue to chase after their dreams in the hopes of a better future.

The movie is still available at Cinemalaya. Duane Lucas Pascua, Rolando Inocencio, Dido de la Paz, Ruth Lopez-Dee, Elan Villafuerte, Shun Andrei Bacalla, Roel Abao, Kiko Matos, Jun Nayra, Jan Rebong, and Chanel Latorre complete the cast.

It is co-written by Mia Salisbury, Lester Caacbay, and Anju De Vera. Executive produced by Warren Carman of Cutaway Productions, Atty Melvin and Congresswoman Ann Matibag, and produced by Christian Lat, Mia Salisbury, and Hannah Ybalez of Black Toro Productions.
